Thank you for your interest in the Town of Union. Our web site has proven to be an effective way for the town to communicate and share information with community members, and to learn of residents’ concerns so problem-solving actions can be promptly taken.

Our team of board members, department heads and staff constantly strive to provide local residents with responsive and efficient service.  As you may know, the Town of Union is the most populous municipality within Broome County.  Consequently, town employees have a wide range of responsibilities to perform, and they work hard to achieve a high level of performance for the people living in our community.

I think you’ll agree the Town of Union is a great place to be raised and to call home.  It seems like only yesterday when I graduated from Union-Endicott High School and left Endicott to attend Siena College, where I earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Accounting/Finance.  The eleven years after college graduation passed quickly,

and my employment in the private sector – as an accountant, manager, consultant, general manager and executive vice president – provided the financial knowledge and business experience that ultimately led to the founding of my own company, Arac Enterprises, Inc.

I’ve applied my private sector credentials to my public sector work as Town Supervisor, as well, and I’m proud of our fiscal progress during my six years in office.  Due to the collective efforts of town department leaders, staff and elected officials, we’ve controlled spending and kept budgeted tax rates at a low annual growth of less than one percent (0.75).  Our attention to expenses also produced another major financial success, when we identified NYSEG street lighting overcharges that resulted in securing a $250,000 refund for the town.

Besides controlling spending, town government has reliably met such infrastructure needs as roadway improvements, and has been innovative in creating new ways to better serve the public.  For instance, last fall approximately 250 area residents participated in the town’s initial Unwanted Medication Collection Day, a free service we’ll provide every year for disposing of outdated medicines.  Another new service you may have heard about is the town’s Winter Fest, first held in January, 2011 at Highland Park.  It was well attended by nearly 500 people, and I’m sure it will continue to be a hit with children and family members of all ages.

The quality of new and established services is made possible due to the dedicated town employees who serve our community.  The quality of their work is evidenced in various areas of the web site, which I believe you’ll find to be a helpful reference source.  If you have any questions about the town’s ongoing efforts to meet current challenges and plan for the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can provide greater insight or further service to you

Welcome to the Town of Union and thank you visiting our website!  Our website is designed to provide accurate and easy-to-use information on Town services and programs.

For those of you who have chosen the Town of Union as your home, you already appreciate the qualities that make the Town of Union a special place. Your Town government provides many important services such as street maintenance, refuse and recycling collection, sewer maintenance and repairs, parks and recreation programs to name a few.  As a result of a philosophy of innovation and cost-based management, your Town government is determined to provide services in the most efficient way possible. The roughly 56,000 residents of the Town of Union can be assured that the Town Board and staff is taking steps to maintain and improve the quality of life in our town.  This does not happen by chance.  Positive accomplishments are realized by the combined efforts of residents, businesses, community organizations, Town leadership, and dedicated Town employees. Together we can continue to make the Town of Union a special place to live, work and raise our families.

Please feel free to contact me at anytime with your thoughts, ideas and concerns so that our community will thrive!

I am a life long resident of the Town of Union.  I grew up in North Endicott and graduated from Union Endicott High School.  I then attended Jacksonville University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management.  My career was in teaching mathematics for 30+ years, and I’ve continued to work for 7½ years as a substitute teacher at Maine Endwell and Union Endicott High Schools.

Prior to my 2008 election as a Councilman for the Town of Union, I served on the Town of Union Citizens Advisory Council for Community Development and was the chairperson for the Village of Endicott Citizens Advisory Committee for Parks.  I was very active as a Basketball Coach for many years, and also founded the Southern Tier Storm AAU Program.

My goal as a Councilman is to continue improving the quality of life for all Town of Union residents.

1)           I am committed to maintaining the high level of service that the Town of Union provides its residents, and will try to continue to improve those services without adding additional economic burden to the town residents.

2)           I will continue to address the growing problems connected with absentee landlords and creeping commercialism and their effect on our neighborhoods.

3)           I believe that working with community leaders and local businessmen to improve our athletic facilities and recreational services will stimulate economic development in the Town of Union.

4)           I am dedicated to exploring new areas of town service, and offering ways to control living costs, that town residents will benefit from.

5)           I will strive to resolve local environmental issues with input provided by members of town advisory organizations.

6)           I believe that working closely with community residents, and having their participation on issues of concern, is essential for effective problem solving.

I would appreciate hearing from Town of Union residents and other local officials.

I always have time to talk and listen to what you have to say.

I have always felt that life’s greatest rewards come from our efforts to help others.  As one of three children who collectively made my parents’ lives interesting, I learned at an early age how satisfying it was to be a brother who my two sisters could depend upon to see things from their perspective.

The opportunities to be supportive and to make a difference in children’s lives have continued while raising my own family of three daughters and one son.  Nothing is more gratifying than giving encouragement and spending time with my children, whether it be attending their school programs or golfing with my son. Like many parents I have been active in youth activities, most recently in scouting and coaching baseball, and having the privilege of being an appointed Broome County Family Court special advocate for abused and neglected children.

Serving the people of this community, like my participation in activities for children, comes from my heart.  The Town of Union is my home, just as it was when I grew up in Endicott, graduated from Union-Endicott High School, attended Broome Community College, and during my 28 years of ongoing employment with NYSEG.  I have advocated for and represented people in the private sector as a union negotiation team member, and I now have the honor of representing in the public sector Town of Union residents as one of their Council members.

As is the case with my NYSEG job as Manager of Training, I also take my Town of Union government responsibilities seriously.  Due to the town’s geographical mass of nearly 20,000 acres and the 56,000 people who live here, the decisions made by Board members affect an expansive region holding one-fourth of the entire population in Broome County.  Consequently, it’s essential for town elected officials to be informed, reasonable and fair in making decisions and in carrying out their duties.

It is truly a privilege to represent town residents, and they deserve total commitment from elected officials like my Town Board colleagues and me.  That is why I have been working my hardest since beginning my Council job on January 1, 2011.  I am sure the next four years, including my chairing of the Parks, Recreation & Environmental Committee, and concurrent service on the Employees & Safety Committee and the Laws & Legislation/Intergovernmental Committee, will bring many opportunities to assist others.  I look forward to affirming by my actions that I am a Councilman my constituents can trust to represent their best interests, and to doing all that I can to help make the Town of Union as special as the people who live here.

The Town of Union is indeed one of the most special places not only in our state, but throughout the country.  Our community – comprised of Endwell and the villages of Endicott and Johnson City – is rich in history, culture and a resolute work ethic that has long been its strength.

This community has been my home throughout my life.  It’s where my husband, Rick, and I chose to live and work, and it’s where my daughter, Kristin, received her education and competed in athletics.  So it’s easy to see why nothing could make me more proud than serving the residents of the Town of Union.  It has been a great honor to represent the people in our community for four terms, and I’ve done my best to live up to the trust that’s been placed in me.

As an elected representative, I believe that providing essential services for town residents, promptly responding to constituent needs, and working to improve people’s lives is what public service is all about.

Other Town Board members also share that belief.  Through teamwork we’ve achieved such recent and important goals as keeping town property tax rates low, leading the way for uniform code enforcement standards, supporting local ambulance, fire protection and state police/sheriff services, and advancing a comprehensive town development plan.

While serving as a Board member, I have had the pleasure of concurrently serving on multiple committees – including Finance (9 years as Chair), Laws & Legislation (8 years-Chair, 13 total years of service), Parks, Recreation & Environment (4 years-Chair, 6 total years), Planning, Zoning & Economic Development (3 years-Chair; 8 total years), and Public Works (3 years).
